independence day

Five years ago in the middle of the night on July 3rd, Bryan and I woke suddenly to a smoke filled house. My heart fluttered in my chest as the adrenaline washed through me, and I rushed into Ruthie’s room to snatch her from her crib. We quickly realized the fire was not in our own [...]

spinster lady

I’m convinced if I had a job outside the house that involved OTHER PEOPLE I wouldn’t have a social life. I know I would have a really hard time not being grouchy with my kids. (Let’s face it, I have a hard time not being grouchy with the kids now and I have no excuse.) I [...]

Clearly, the way to a man’s heart…

Ruthie: Mom, why doesn’t [old babysitter] come over anymore? Me: She went off to college. Ruthie: When she’s done with college is she going to be a mom? Me: Maybe. Or she might get a job… Thomas: OR MAKE DINNER!

rest in peace, little bird

This cute little baby blue jay lived a short life in our yard today, the mama blue jay flapping and squawking above my head whenever I approached. I was able to catch the bird and help it through to the other side of the fence, but it kept hopping back through the chain links. I began [...]

Friday Link Love

Am I Kate? - PBS Supersisters While I’ve never watched John and Kate Plus 8, I’ll admit I got caught up a little in the gross blog commentary re their personal lives as depicted on the show. It was refreshing to come across this post that invites you to empathize a little with their circumstances, and [...]

NoMo NaBloPoMo

Yes, people, I burned out and took a computer sabbatical over a long weekend. I am officially out of the running for any sort of prize, but I feel no failure. The structure of posting every day for 30 days inspired my idea for writing about the Thirty Things I Love, and now I will continue developing that idea into a larger writing project. I was a much better, much happier mom this weekend without the pressure of my ambitious goal, so I have no regrets.

I continue to blog as usual at… Continue

Thirty Things I Love: Letting go of the competition if means I can go to bed at a decent hour.

Wednesdays are hard. I think I was home for a total of twenty minutes today. I know I love something, I just can't think of what at the moment. My bed? Maybe? So this will be my sluff post of the week, and now I will go to sleep.

Thirty Things I Love: Ruthie

IMG_2207.JPGToday is a good day to write about loving my four year old, because today I hated her so much I nearly killed her. Ruthie and I have clashed since the tiniest hint of her personality began to manifest. She is a smart, strong-willed, whisp of a girl with anger that could challenge any teenage boy.

I have not always appreciated the sunny side of her dispos… Continue

Thirty Things I Love: Writing

Strangely, I've been staring at this blog editor for about 15 minutes, now, trying to decide what to write, because when you write about writing it'd better be good. I'm actually in a writing slump these days, seeing as how I'm not as depressed or angry or quite the control frContinue

Thirty Things I Love: Pajamas

Appropriately, as I write this post I am wearing my favorite pajamas - the light blue cotton jammie pants and long sleeve shirt.

When I was about to explode With Child four and a half years ago, I sent my good friend on a mission to find me some pajamas I could live in for the next several months, as I knew my life as I knew it was soon to end and I would be spending a lot… Continue
