Blog Ads and Paid to Post: Is It Worth It?

Recently, I have heard more about Blogher and Ad Sense and wondered what that is all about. I was also wondering if anyone blogs for profit though such sites as Pay Per Post or Helium.
I have blogs through Blogger and Wordpress. I know that Wordpress doesn't allow the ads, but will allow Pay Per Post and Helium. Also, many of these services require a particular google pagerank. I have no idea what that means or how to acquire it.
Can anyone shed some light on these things? Do you use them? Are they working for you? Are they a waste of time? Are some programs better than others? Are they scandalous? :P
Thanks to all!

I don't use any of the pay-for-blogging or ad services, but I can tell you PageRank is Google's way of assessing how to rank a site. It is a combination of:

- visits (particularly those visits that arrived through Google services; the more, the better)
- frequency of visits (the more often, the better)
- frequency of updates (the more often Google's spiders find new or updated content when they arrive on your site, the better)
- the amount of content on the site (this helps link it to more possible searches; the more, the better)
- the number and density of inbound links (the more, the better, and the fewer links on a page linking to your blog, the better)
- the PageRank of sites those inbound links come from (the higher the PageRank of sites linking to yours, the better),
- the adherence of the site to Google's rules (which mainly means not deliberately manipulating Google's search results; the better adherence record, the better, though infractions do get wiped off Google's record eventually)
- other stuff which Google is reluctant to reveal (partly because it would probably include things like paying for a Google sponsored ad, which wouldn't do Google's reputation as a relatively objective search engine any good, and partly because Google doesn't want people artificially manipulating their search rankings).

Thanks for this info! I learned that my pagerank is 5, but I didn't know where to go to see it. I might have to download the Google Toolbar, but I have a Mac at home. I don't think it works with Mac. Thanks for clarifying!

I used to to do PayPerPost, but I ended up not liking it and quit after a month or so. Many people seem pretty pleased with it, though.

I've been doing PayPerPost for about 5 weeks and I really like it. My PageRank needs to be higher so I can get some higher paying gigs, but I'm doing ok. Can't quit the day job yet. I also signed up for a couple of other sites where they mail you opportunities, and so far I've only gotten one of those.

FYI - on PayPerPost your first post pays $20. It's worth trying out to see if you like it. A Page Rank of 5, like yours, would mean higher paying jobs.

Let me know if you want a referral link. :)

Thanks! This is helpful. :) The only problem I have is that Wordpress doesn't allow Pay Per Post. I'm taking my blog to a stand alone host, but I will probably have to rebuild the page rank when I do that. I will keep this info in mind for future refereance. Thanks again!

Have you seen those blogs that have every other word double underlined, and when you hover your mouse over those words it pops up an ad?

Those blogs look like shit. I won't read them. Or I'll try really hard not to.

I think I know what you mean, but that's not the type of ads I'm talking about. Blogher.com is an ad network for women to share their businesses. I'm looking into that one as well as Google AdSense. The ads look more like part of the site. They're off to the side and are not part of the articles. Also, you can control what appears on the site so if you think an ad conflicts with your blog or your readers' interests, you can block certain content from appearing. :)

That makes sense. Google AdSense is a good idea, because it gives you free access to Google Analytics, which is a great way to analyze your blog traffic.

I've been trying AdSense for about a week now. So far, so good. Been using Analytics, too. Thanks for the info! :)
